DISCOVER TOP 5 WINE BARS IN ATHENS !

One little known, but it was the Greeks who introduced the vine and viticulture in France at the time of the establishment of Greek colonies in antiquity (VIII-VI century. BC.). A few thousand years later, it was the turn of the French to bring the Greeks of new more resistant varieties and empower them to improve their production.
The growing reputation of Greek wines are not based on international varieties, but on indigenous grape varieties some of which may go back to the days of ancient Greece. More than 320 indigenous grape varieties are listed as well. Today winemakers of Greece saw their sales increase, particularly in China and Japan and obviously in the EU markets. With 122,000 hectares of vines, Greece occupies the 14th largest vineyards surfaces. Macedonia, the Peloponnese (70% of production in the country), Crete, the Cyclades, Thrace, Limnos island regions are experiencing steadily.
Wine is part of the Greek identity, but if you do not have time to visit all the wineries and Greek wineries, here are my top 5 Athens wine bars.

          1-VINTAGE

Inside VINTAGE

Panos and Iza love wine and food. Panos is a sculptor and tennis player and Iza, Polish-born economist. They decided to open their first restaurant in Ioannina, capital of Epirus, northwest of Greece. Soon, the restaurant's reputation grew, thanks to the warmth of its welcome.
Panos and Iza are embarking today on a new adventure with the opening of their wine bar in Athens, the Vintage. The cellar has more than 300 references of Greek wines and some French wines, in case you miss the Hexagon. You always find the wine that you like.
Some bottles are very expensive, because Panos and Iza collect their wines as works of art! Naxos cheeses, jams Chios, cheese puffs of Limnos sheep accompany your glass of Greek wine.

            2-BY THE GLASS

In front of the Russian Orthodox Church in Athens, Fotini, a real "connoisseur", opened one of the warmest wine bars for lovers of fine Greek wines. Here you will find bottles of rare Greek productions in small quantities. The prestige of the catalog do not get tired to surprise the customer.

Accompany your bottle of wine cheese and meats from different regions of Greece. Also try the specialties of the house: mini burgers with yogurt sauce and dakakia, a Cretan specialty tomato and fresh cheese from Domokos mountain. A feast for the eye and palate.

                  3-KIKI DE GREECE

Roza studied and research on biotechnology aromatic plants but his love and passion is all that revolves around the vine and wine. She meets one day that of Vassilis, a young Greek trained in oenology, and together they opened their Kiki wine bar in Greece.

Meet Roza

Here sparkling wines and organic wines are the real stars, and are enhanced by the excellent cuisine and typical Greek. The house specialty is the tart Greek cheeses: each day a different pie on the menu. Taste also the foam beans from Kastoria (Macedonia) and the velvety beans with capers and eel of Evritania, all accompanied by a glass of white wine. A wonder !

     4-OINOSCENT

Oinos in Greek means "wine". Oinoscent functions both as a cellar and as a wine bar offering more than 900 references. Among them, the most representative areas of the land, but also small vineyards from all regions and islands of Greece. You have the choice between the wine list at the bar and bottles for sale on the shelves of the cellar.

The list at the bar and the menu changes every three days. You have a large variety of cocktails based on wine. Try the Samos Ginger Spice, made with sweet tasting wine from the island of Samos.

               5- PLAZA LOUNGE

At the heart of the city, at the corner of Syntagma Square and Stadiou Street is the place to go for a drink or a cocktail in Athens.

The sommelier gives advice not only to make the right choice without breaking the bank, but also to prevent errors. Follow the guide. The house wine red and white Athens Plaza is an excellent idea.

The leader Nikos Yiannopoulos prepared for you a diet menu and especially a variety of salads. Try the omelet Greek feta cheese and burger formaella of Mount Parnassos. A different experience.

And you ? What do you think of Greek wines? Do you have an address to share? I welcome your comments and suggestions forward.
